Tbf most of the horses were just slaughtered as we couldn't be fucked bringing them back after we'd put gerry back in his box.

Still, not as bad as stopping the fleet that defeated the Spanish Armada from disembarking as it was cheaper to let them succumb to disease than paying them. Obviously the numbers involve make the horses seem worse, but the Frenchies will have put them to good use.

Citations for both of those? I’m interested to read up on it as it’s not what I’ve read on either subject (I was under the impression that most horses died/were put down due to disease or exhaustion during battles of attrition on the western front, and that the few surviving sailors after the epidemic were allowed disembarkment but mostly died penniless and riddled with typhus in Margate).

Looks like the majority of horses did die of exhaustion and that 'only' tens of thousands were destroyed.

Can't remember where I read about the English navy. I want to say it was on one of schama's programmes years back.
