I've only ever been to two shows: one got cancelled 5 minutes before the start-time, and the other was your stereotypical Oxbridge wank.

I'm in no way against it (would be gutted if it went to Glasgow for example) but one of the problems for me is there's so much choice if you're not sure where to begin - so many 5-star reviews for so many categories it all just melts into one Laugh

I do like a wander round the town every so often, enjoying the circus that it is, and the fireworks are Quite Good if they catch you out by surprise.

I don't drink in the Ferryboat, nor do I do my shopping at the corner shop on Niddrie Marishal Drive but I do tend to agree that the vast majority of the Edinburgh populace dinnae gie a fuck about the Edinburgh Festival/Fringe.

Aye of course they're here as punters, you can't say that's what the majority of visitors to the city are though Laugh

It must be one of the most diverse audiences in the world, i suppose that's part of what makes it great.

Seriously though the Fringe is superb. If you have even a passing interest in leaving the house and going to do things, there’ll be dozens of things that would appeal to you. Genuinely amazed to read that people here who live in Edinburgh have never bothered seeing anything at it Warnock

Not saying none of it's good. Been to quite a few shows and enjoyed them all but you have to sift through a lot of utter shite.

Think moving away from Edinburgh was what made me appreciate the Festival, and how lucky Edinburgh is to have an event like it. It is very different when you work in central Edinburgh, though - suspect a lot of the disagreement here is between people who have worked in the centre and people who haven't.

Nah that’s not quite true man.  Probably all mostly rich but definitely more diverse than just the predominantly white countries.

The Chinese influence on the festival is significant now, i was speaking to some Chinese opera a few year ago and they were saying they can afford to come now because their government is now making a huge effort to push their culture out into the world.  Usually when a small show comes in you’ll have the actors and maybe a couple staff, they’re rocking up with about 30 extra staff all paid for by the gvt Laugh

Same with India and Africa, you’re seeing a lot more shows from these countries/continent and that brings the audience too.  I seen a class African production last year was some sort of music/circus thing Quite Good

It’s always going to be rich folk from these further away places who are coming to Edinburgh though, not sure how you really change that.  Edinburgh is expensive at the best of times and triples in price during the festival.

Right then, what should I go see?

Don't want some wide cunt gieing it laldy wit the funny stuff,
Don't want tonnes of twentysomething round me shouting Bingo as some daftie in a donkey's costume pulls a carrout oot his erse,
Don't want to see some boy in light blue tights tippy-toeing round the stage (I don't have a tin flute),
Don't like magicians tricking me,
Don't want someone reading me poetry one on one Monty Ha

Don't mind the panto at Xmas
Don't mind ska bands like Capone & the Bullets
Don't mind Festival cunts getting offended
Don't mind a proper old school animal circus
I'm struggling now ....

Lot of folk on twitter saying that the festival is much quieter than normal this year? Anyone feel that’s for truth in it? I feel like the fringe started a wee bit earlier than usual this year though?

I saw this burd a few years ago. The show was absolutely mental and she ended up getting fingered by a boy on stage. Definitely going to see her again Pinilla

Do you see many African families on holiday wandering round going to shows, or are most of the Africans you speak to performing in world music groups? Monty Oh You

It’s not something you’d really pick up on as a white Scottish bloke, but I’ve taken a few black and Asian friends to the Fringe over the last 3 years and all of them have commented that they were the only non-white people in the audience at just about every show.

Fair enough you might not see a lot of African families but you see loads of Chinese and Indian families about. Suppose it depends what you go to see and maybe my view is a bit skewed since the acts were from the places we are talking about so will attract that audience.

I do think it's a very diverse crowd the fringe though, definitely at the Fringe level I just see the acts as part of the overall fringe audience. Boring argument anyway, im glad we agree the festival is good jjay

Been aggressively defending it this year as sick of hearing moany as fuck locals complaining about how they're completely put out and feeling sorry for themselves Laugh

Laugh That's just a random on the fringe website. Broadway baby is a bit loose with their reviews sometimes but 5 stars is alright from them.

Just got to go see things you have a bit of interest in, if i'm looking for stuff to go see and haven't got anything in mind i'll just go sit at the bar and wait for some cunt to come and sell you their show.

Well, I like the crowds and the buzz, if only we could get rid of the artsy performing wankers then the Festival/fringe would be great. Monty Oh You

I think the proliferation of Chinese and Indian visitors (something I noticed 5 yrs ago after spending a few days in Paris) is a consequence of the rise of the upper middle classes (definitions vary) in those countries.
