The tone is already set - they will say they couldn’t give Scotland ‘special treatment’ because Italy didn’t get the chance to beat the All Blacks to go through Rolleyes

Japan already got an incredible call last week to give them the bonus point against Samoa, it’s like Ahn-Jung Hwan all over again APRant

Team named for the game v Japan.

Mcinally drops to the bench. Laidlaw as captain.

No place for Hastings in the squad. I still think we look chronically weak in the centre.

Can’t see any way the game tomorrow is on. Huge parts of land around the stadium already under water and the typhoon hasn’t yet hit Yokohama Eek

Worst typhoon in 60 years so there’s an element of bad luck despite it being held during typhoon season, but I still can’t understand the lack of planning for something like this. I know it’s easy to say just move the game, but just move the game Warnock

Play it behind closed doors on the South Island which will be far less affected, to discourage any fans from needless travel. The Ireland game is about to kick off there shortly while the typhoon is hitting land near Tokyo, no reason there couldn’t be another game there tomorrow. The game should’ve been moved a few days ago so no one needed to travel during the bad weather.

See Eddie Jones and Steve Hansen commenting along the lines of “if you win your first game then you won’t be affected by this” Get To Woy Easy to say when England are playing the USA and Tonga but the whole premise of group stages is everyone gets an equal chance to qualify, not win your first game because there’s a possibility you won’t need to play your last.

It's an absolute shitshow. Surely it's unacceptable to be making the decision 11 hours before kick-off? If the game is cancelled because of dangerous conditions, there will be 70,000+ fans needlessly in a city where they're about to be hit by a typhoon. If they'd moved it, announced it would be played behind closed doors or even cancelled it a couple of days ago, you could at least have ensured fan safety. The current approach is both putting fans at danger AND making the tournament look a farce Fart Smelly

Their 'contingency plan' that they've been going on about for over a year was to move games to another stadium under 20 miles away Cornette

Steve Hansen has some cheek - Parisse is absolutely spot on that World Rugby would have moved hell or high water to play the game if the shoe was on the other foot and the All Blacks needed the win. Gutting for Parisse and Ghiraldini to bow out of international rugby in this way as well Sad

Farce if it’s cancelled tbh.

If the Japanese has any honour they’d let us go through

I know that’s tongue in cheek, but in fairness to Japan they’ve gone on record saying they want to play the game. I’ll feel sorry for them if there’s any sort of shadow over them going through, as the fuck up is not of their doing.

I get the feeling that their mentality as a nation won’t be one of “suck it up, them’s the breaks chumps”. I might be living in the past but I think they will take it as a bit of a slant on their “honour” if there was any questioning of their credibility.

Pretty sure the japanese will try their hardest to get the game played, but it'll come down to world rugby as to whether it goes ahead.

Just send the jocks home. They're fucking shite anyway and only delaying the inevitable, get them sent back to their homes in Kent and Somerset.

I know we put no contingency plans in place and are offering no flexibility on the day, but trust me we want it to be played. It’ll be such a shame if it gets cancelled and we have to send ourselves through. Monty Oh You

Is it not world rugby who have fucked things up in terms of contingency plans? I didn’t think it was actually anything to do with Japan or even the organisers of this specific tournament May Bee

Yeah it's Japan who were in charge of putting together the contingency plans (which in theory they would have had to demonstrate even before they won the tournament). Strictly speaking it's probably World Rugby who are responsible for executing the plans, but it all comes back to Japan and their planning (their planning being 'move it 15 minutes up the road' Warnock ).

Should find out in the next half hour or so if the game is happening. You'd think the incentive for Japan would be that if they continue cocking this up they won't get to host another major tournament any time soon, but they're actually hosting the Olympics in the same city in the middle of typhoon season next year. We need to win with at least one bonus point and keep Japan from getting a losers bonus point (either scoring 4 tries or losing by 7 points or less).

Not quite - we need to win and prevent them from getting a bonus point, or win with a bonus point if they do get a bonus point (i.e. we need to get 4 points more from the match than them).

They’re not amazing but play a fast paced game and obviously have the home advantage. I think we’ll win but the bonus might be a stretch too far.
