The fact that he’s Remain is an easy stick to beat him with long after Brexit happens as well.

I cannot emphasise gris enough but he is obviously who Labour should appoint - I’m just saying he’ll have a tough time making headway in the north and midlands.

This is the weirdest conversation. Do you fancy having a wee stop and think about this pish you’re coming out with man Warnock

Eeh by gum! Whodathunkit.

Boris is an outlier having spent a couple decades creating a false everyman persona though. Starmer isn’t going to be able to do that instantly - it will be incredibly easy for opponents/media etc to discredit him as a Londoner who represents a southern constituency, and wanted to overrule The Will of The People don’t you forget, so how can he say he’s looking after the best interests of Cleethorpes? It’s an open goal for his opponents.

Can we all just agree the obvious statement that Northern folk would in theory have a slight preference for someone with a familiar accent, but also that they are actual humans and if said person was a chancer then they wouldn't give a fuck how strong their regional accent is - see Jess Phillips for details.

Mind when Sarko thought the Brexit referendum was going to prove that Scotland and England were no different? Heh

We all live in our own wee bubbles, and our views of what other people want are influenced by that, but at least recognise that's the case when it keeps fuelling your bad takes.

It's not entirely clear what will bring northern voters back to Labour, if anything - I think this might turn out to be a similar long term loss of votes to what we've seen in Scotland, albeit for different reasons. What's for sure is that it'll take more than a northern accent.

Ok, but don't bring up outliers that can deligitimise your point when trying to back up your own argument. Warnock

That Farage will be another outlier too, I suppose. Even though he mobiised a shitload of northern votes for Brexit.

Why can't Starmer not be an outlier? He's spent more years in Leeds than Boris and Farage have days.

Ok, but your argument was to chuck them a regional accent and they'll lap it up?

For me Alan Johnson nailed it when he said they need a leader who people outside of the big cities will believe in; rightly or wrongly it might come down to basically needing someone with a regional accent.

Monty Oh You

I’ve said that his southern background will undoubtedly be used against him in the north and midlands where people clearly feel a disconnect with the Labour Party - a lot of people will see another southerner and leave it at that.

A flippant remark at the end of my post doesn’t equate to me saying appoint any northerner.

The next election will be fought and won on the climate emergency. No one will care about what accent the leader has, it will take a perception of the leader being strong and decisive and I think Starmer has that.

We'll see. People are starting to realise it could cause a bit of bother for them and it's only going to get worse over the next 4 years.
