Rather good wee book on six survivors of the bomb, how they survived and the immediate aftermath and subsequent radiation sickness they developed. This was a real mystery to begin with until doctors noticed film for x-rays were already exposed despite being in the hospital basement in storage.

Quite Good that sounds a really good read. Odd question, but would it traumatise a 9 year old? Going to have to home-school the bairn for the foreseeable and think first-hand accounts are good with shit like this. He can name both the nukes the US used in WW2 but not how many people they killed for example, so I need to realign his priorities  Warnock

No. There's some gore (soldiers looking up into the sky as the bomb detonated, their eyes melted, people vaporised or turned to carbon) but overall it's fine. Probably would think it's cool.

Quite Good

It's a relatively short book too.

Didn't cover as contemporary a time period as I thought, focussing mostly on 50s-80s China, it's still really insightful. Absolutely jos in parts. Think a few of the fam said they had bought it so would be interested in hearing their thoughts.

Cracking book. Was a lot of Fat Cunt stuff like.

I imagined blowing the boy's head off that was in jail for selling women Happy

Did this jump out at you at all? Really is a difficult read at times.

I know what you mean - is that the same guy who sold his own daughters? Said something like, "They're poor, what do they know about happiness?" or something like that? Absolutely hated that guy, and he's only mentioned for a few pages at the start iirc  Warnock

I watched a VICE video years ago where they were in some city in China that had the highest pollution levels in the world and breathing was basically like smoking several packs of fags a day. The government had come to all the farmers and made them build mines on their land because there was coal all over the region. They didn't have any mining tools or any clue about mining. This was about 2010  Clanger

The Yi District Chief's Wife was grim as fuck. The stepson living underground for two years  Monty LewLew She must have been resilient as fuck to keep going after all the horrible things that happened in her life.

Finished this now - glad I read it in the end. The delay wasn't a reflection on the book, but on my ability to concentrate on anything.

Now reading Lanzarote et autres textes (that's 'Lanzarote and other texts' Fart Smelly ) by Michel Houellebecq because I love to deliberately get myself seething at things Jose

The end is in sight and I'll be able to start reading (non-research) books again.

Got a wee pile building up in my living room, just sitting there, taunting me. Warnock

One is the sociological/criminological phenomenon surrounding clubbing (not the Pondlife kind). Its like I've not learned why I havent been reading for pleasure. Monty Oh Well

Got a couple of books on the way:

Very good reviews so looking forward to getting into them.

If anyone has any Scottish history books they can recommend, preferably not modern history, then fire them up here.
