Looking at the 'Arbeit macht frei' photo and smugly reflecting to myself that I, a wise centrist liberal, the adult in the room, understand that we shouldn't call these people Nazis just because we disagree with them.

Been predicting for a few months now that there is going to be significant and sustained civil unrest and anarchy in the US by the end of 2020. As seems more and more likely the Democrats are manipulating who their candidate will be (very possibly Killary) and given Trump's desperation to cling onto the office however achieved plus the economic devastation post Covid-19 everything is going to be a tinderbox. Increasingly likely this gets very very messy in a number of states.

It's being reported here as if America just aren't taking this seriously at all and the public aren't really on board with lockdowns is that the case?

It's being reported here as if America just aren't taking this seriously at all and the public aren't really on board with lockdowns is that the case? The thing about the US which is really difficult to grasp is the sheer size of it. Even after living here for years I still find it hard to comprehend the population and vastness of some of the states and the distances between places especially when traveling. Different cultures, hugely different demographics, massive income disparity, education, religious 'beliefs', even different laws and how state government, as well as federal government manages the citizens. California for instance has over 40 million people (that are known about!) living in it so its roughly 2/3 the population of the UK alone. 30 million people, so half the population of the UK is now unemployed here. It's crazy what's happening. So defining how the US public have reacted in a collective sense is totally impossible as people have not had at all the same experiences or been under anything like the same restrictions. New York has basically been the epicenter of it so we've been on lockdown for over 7 weeks now but my Mrs family have hardly had any knock on effect in the south. From our perspective the vast majority of people we know or have witnessed have respected the guidelines which is far from easy in a city where everyone lives on top of each other and getting anywhere is impossible without human contact. A lot of people in Manhattan are professionals in one field or another so many have had the fortune to be able to work from home and indeed a lot traveled to wherever they are originally from either in the US or elsewhere as soon as this kicked off. We have 12 apartments on our floor and only 4 have been inhabited since mid March. It's been pretty dead. On the flip side I can totally understand why you could get the impression, from the news (my own family back home have similarly asked), as you did, if there was any sense of order or seriousness as to Covid-19. Some states are off the chart mental eg Georgia and Florida in both how they have dealt with this since the start and now hope they are going about reopening. Again what people don't understand, how could they, is that these are largely state decisions not federal so Trump doesn't even hold authority over some of the things happening. My worry is how things are ever eased pre vaccine, I just can't see how things will work in a major city where for instance the transit system has a couple of million people using it on a daily basis on a normal working day. I think it's going to be a long time till any kind of 'normal'.

Donald Trump's four-step plan to reopen the US economy – and why it will be lethal
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfre..._clipboard Some pretty horrific reading here. Quote:Trump's labor department has decided that furloughed employees “must accept†an employer's offer to return to work and therefore forfeit unemployment benefits, regardless of Covid-19. Quote:Meanwhile, the attorney general, William Barr, has directed the justice department to take legal action against any state or local authorities imposing lockdown measures that “could be violating the constitutional rights and civil liberties of individual citizensâ€. Quote:Trump is pushing to give businesses that reopen a “liability shield†against legal action by workers or customers who get infected by the virus.

I'm sure his pals have been in his ear telling him how badly their stocks are doing too. Imagine being a server on $3 an hour and being forced back to work knowing that your employer doesn't have to provide you with any safety gear and gets off scot-free if you die
