Anyone else hearing Terry Venables again? Seems a bit unlikely, but it was doing the rounds last time too?

You're not the first person I've heard this from, would be a good appointment if we could pull it off.

From the source in the backroom, apparently three names we are interviewing: -

1. Weir
2. McCann
3. Mystery candidate who has experience in England and on Spanish soil

Have heard the same from my usual source (same as yours I think Mak) and also separately from a third person with ties to certain figures.

Venables is 8 years older than JJ, he’s 77 ffs and hasn’t been involved in football for years.

Is this real life?

My first thoughts on Venables were about his age too, but the more I think about it, the more I like it. Sporting director isn't the kind of massively hands-on role that manager is, and he'll still have great contacts in the game through his former players now being managers and so on. We're not going to get a name as big as TV at the peak of his powers, as they'd be somewhere other than Hearts. I love JJ as much as the next man, but does he really have contacts that other people at the club don't already have? I'm not convinced.

Obviously it's just rumours at this stage, but I can see a rationale for going after El Tel.

Haven’t seen him mentioned and I imagine it’d be extremely unlikely, but is Ann not quite pally with Sir Alex Ferguson. Would be a sensational appointment

No.

Do you think Venables has even heard of Robbie Neilson? I’m struggling to get my head round this one, I’m not saying Makween hasn’t heard this but again in my view this is a job for a much younger man unless Budge is simply looking for an experienced advisor. Unlike Mak I think this is very much a hands on job, long hours, lots of travel taking in many games at all levels both senior and youth, building the infrastructure of the club, developing the Academy, liaising with scouts and RN and his staff etc etc. This is an enormous job given what Levein has left behind, not one for a JJ or El Tel at their stages. If she needs advice from these types of guys then fair enough but we need someone who is living and breathing Hearts in that position.

Kash - why would Sir Alex at his age in life, extremely wealthy and enjoying his family, horse racing, speaking engagements and attending Utd matches want a 60 hr a week role at Hearts on a couple hundred grand a year?

Overall, I can't agree that Venebles would be a good choice. I suppose it's more that he'll probably not be progressive enough to convince Mrs Budge that worries me; if they don't have a good relationship it'll come apart at the seems. If he can win her round at his interview on wednesday then it'll auger well for the future. Maybe his media personality is a bit of an act and he'll tick all the right boxes when they get in to the board room.

So Venables is being interviewed by Hearts on Wednesday? Wow. This summer is wild.
