Had slowly finished all the whiskies I had last year (just due to being on a tighter budget now and not able to justify replacing what I finished), but got a bottle of Tamnavulin for Christmas and am enjoying it. No age statement and quite a generic Speyside, but nice all the same. Feel like where some whiskies you'd only really have one and savour it, this is one I could get pished on (in a good way).

A lot to be said for a solid highland or speyside, that's just really fucking drinkable.

That's my favourite. Can get a 25 year old but think you're looking north of 100 quid.

Got a bottle of that last Christmas and it was class.

Got a bottle of this after trying it over in Islay.

Also tried this when I was there that might fit the bill - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bowmore-Darkest.../ref=nodl_

What whiskies does the person you're buying for like? Hard to say what constitutes a good bottle otherwise tbh.

^ spent 3 months as a whisky salesman in 2014 so thinks he's an expert

To be fair, I’m sure you recommended one to me a while back that my brother was well impressed with when I gave him it.

In all seriousness, if the guy is a whisky drinker and you have a way of finding out what he likes before buying (even if only by region, e.g. does he like Speysides, Islays, etc), it's worth doing that.

Think a Glenfarclas as Mikey mentioned would probably please most folk.

As Mak says though, finding out what they normally drink would be best.

Suppose there are a few classics that you can’t really go wrong with. Speyside or highland.

An islay (Pinilla) would be ideal for some but others can’t abide a peated lwhisky.
