Didn't have many boring nights drinking Juliper until the break of dawn with my mate, Khaled.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-36042877 I mentioned it before a couple of yrs ago, that I was astounded to be reminded of his surname when going through some old print-offs of a couple of emails I exchanged with him on my return to Canada. Pretty mental really, what eventually transpired, not long after that Scotland game, in NY NY, and then the rest. Got a much better city vibe in Bruges and Ghent, Kelly. Anyway, as it's just a weekend you'll likely have a great time.

Looking for a 3 or 4 day city break in March sometime. Nothing too expensive either. Looking at total budget of about £700 for flights, accommodation and food. Any suggestions?

Mate got me a plane ticket to Bucharest at the end of the month. I really can't be arsed. Is there anything good there apart from football hooliganism and hate crimes?

Nicolae Ceaușescu palace, or rather the Palace of the Parliament is pretty mental, though I never went inside ( not sure if you can now) as it wasn't accessible in '94. It's the heaviest building in the world according to wiki and second only in size to the Pentagon, I'm sure I read somewhere. The tomatae salads are pure heaven. You might see a horse and cart like in one of those old vampire movies. don't see that too often, not even in Mussy.

Suffice to say when mates went to bed I wanted to stay up and keep drinking, as I was staying just 30 yards off the Grand Place in a nifty wee Medieval style hotel. Met Khaled first night, he'd only just arrived from Morocco about a year previously iirc - pilot jacket and red leather nikes is what I remember. We were sitting fairly close to each other on a wall down near the lower part of the square just enjoying the world as it went by, then just got chatting - football mainly (I was there for the Scotland qualifier that we needed to at least get a draw from; lost 2-0). I offered him some of my beer, and we hit it off. Met him each night, drank beer, & chatted about all sorts of stuff (half joking said he should hook up with my g/f's younger sister, he said he'd happily move to North America) until the wee small hours then I'd stagger back to my hotel in time for breakfast, then go to sleep until early afternoon, then meet the lads again. The hotel staff knew my routine - only guest who'd turn up drunk for breakfast. It was a good breakfast too. I returned to Edinburgh on the Friday after the midweek match; that was the 7th, and of course the world changed a few days later. I got an email from him, it was pretty short, a hiya basically, a couple of weeks after I returned to Canada mid Sep, and sent a reply or two back. He was a pretty decent guy, a good laugh and just like any other man his age, probably mid-to-late twenties at the time trying to get by and have a good time in doing so. He was definitely a bit of a social butterfly!

Dubrovnik is superb. I found it to be fairly cheap tbh. We went for 4 days and that was plenty. You're really close to a few countries too. Bosnia and Montenegro. Maybe worth a visit while there?

You never know mate. I might get burned to death in a bush-fire, so there's always that. |
