Documentary about the Pappas brothers, Australian skateboarders.
The less you know going in the better
Just watched this, great story and characters and it's really helped by all the primary film taken from skateboarders at the time. It was hindered by some of the interviewees being braindead and tongue tied. "fucking skateboarders get fucked in the fucking ass and it's fucking fucked".
I asked folk on my facebook for recommendations of less obvious stuff on netflix. Some good, some not so good
Obvious Child - Stand up comedian gets knocked up after a one night stand and has it aborted. It's really good, and for such a painfully shite sounding premise it must be good if i say "it's really good". Right?
Klown - Danish roadtrip style comedy. Watching it, i was struck by how seldom i watch straight up comedy films nowadays, and i think it being in a foreign language helped as you're less caught up in one dimensional characters and more willing to embrace sigh gags. A guy gives his mother in law a pearl necklage in the first fifteen minutes.
The Pill - A movie so astonishingly bad it makes me angry. Usually how well something is, or isn't edited, doesnt come up, but this is so poorly chopped together and strewn with continuity errors it's almost impossible to attempt to get in to it. Anyway - a guy cheats on his mrs with a kooky girl and spends a day trying to get her to take the morning after pill. Well, i say 'cheats' - they fall asleep before fucking, but he wakes to find her riding him without a condom on. So it's rape. Anyway, he's a liar and a doormat who would rather spend a day lying and chasing around after this lassie as opposed to simply saying what he wants. She's 'kooky' and takes any form of constructive criticism or advice as the worst insult ever. This dynamic occurs in every scene. They're neither of them bad actors - they just come across as trained actors with no insight or natural ability. It's like watching a right back at a mid-level EPL club; an athlete, but not a footballer.
It is desperately trying to be an indie flick and it's just offensively poor.
