People who just soak up mini snippets from news pieces are ignoring the many decent points he does actually make. They are the ones ignoring his reasonable ramblings.
At least I'm looking at this from both sides.

You're right about why he was voted in. People fed up with the usual politician and are willing to ignore/look past his more odious views as he promised to make their lives better.
E:and some racists voted him in as well because they thought he'd be a good candidate for their purposes
