That was always going to be the case though, Democrats stronger in more densely populated areas which are harder to break. You could argue that Clinton's "strategy" of not visiting some of the northern rural states like Wisconsin is what cost her.
I think the 1/4 thing is a bit fake too, all those non-voters made a decision not to vote for Clinton either, so to use them as a stick to beat Trump with is stupid.
Clinton did as well as any Democrat would expect in the coastal strongholds, but she didn't have any appeal across the whole of the US. Here's the results by county -
