Have fond memories of watching him at my grandparents on a Saturday night when we went up to stay now and again. As 2Na says - a link back to the music hall ages. Not many left who tread the boards with Eric Morecambe, Norman Wisdom etc.
When TV became the meca and more or less killed music hall age, guys like Brucie, Bob Monkhouse and Roy Castle all got chucked in to TV and became more successful as they had the skill for transcending their skills to the audience through the camera - not all the folk from the music hall era could do that. Forsyth really really wanted to get out the Play your Cards Right, Generation Game that had been so good to him and wanted his own chat show, which due to the power and name he had was given but it was cancelled I think pretty early on as he was not very good on that platform. He went back to what he was great at and kept his career going way longer than the rest.
Always thought he came across as a genuinely decent bloke.
