If we miss out on him to Hibs I'll be disappointed. But I'm not sure what exactly Hearts have done wrong here?
We could have conducted all negotiations with him behind closed doors, but then our training facilities and new stand are clearly something a prospective signing will be swayed by seeing.
Have we "paraded" him about? Or have we just actually shown him Tynecastle and Ricarton? The press are on this signing, but that's because Lafferty is an ex-Rangers player who has had a fairly controversial career at times. His agent will no doubt have also been speaking to the press about him going to speak with Hearts, and then Hibs.
Why wouldn't he? Whether you think Lafferty will be a great signing, good signing or an average one, the fact is he could earn far more money than we or Hibs can offer elsewhere. He's got no affinity towards either club. In fact he probably knows he was hated by supporters of every club bar Rangers during his time here.
So whether he's speaking to Hibs because he would consider moving to them, or is only doing it to try and get more money out of us, is irrelevant. It's win win for him either way. Whoever he signs for he'll have curried favour with those fans because they'll have got one over their rivals and he'll likely have earned more money than if he'd only spoken to us.
I don't really see what we could have done differently here. When it comes to a player like him, signing for a club like us, the power lies with him once it's made public were in for him. Especially if other clubs come in for him.
