What do you think of my whip gais?

Na seriously though thinking about buying a new car and my old man is a fucking idiot when it comes to stuff like this (depsite working in a garage Wiggo )

Thinking about going for an Audi A3, probably somewhere in between 05-07. Not sure if they're the same models. Anyone ever had one, if so any problems? Was looking up reliability and they seem to fair actually pretty well online.

My current car is second hand but i was pretty lucky with it... although now quite hesitant to buy of autotrader just incase i'm getting sold a shanner.

Any tips/recommendations appreciated gais thx.

Advice.

Save for property instead of buying a car like an Audi.

Property nearly always appreciates in value, a car will depreciate in value by about 70% within one year, not to mention the running costs of an expensive car for parts crippling you.

A car is genuinely the worst investment a young man in their 20s can make. Especially living in Edinburgh, where a car is not required/a bitch to drive around in.

Buying a house really isn't in my scope at the moment Scott.

I have a deposit saved up for a flat to move out in the summer, but definitely not even thinking about buying yet.

So save more deposit so you can get a better rate on a mortgage when you do buy.

Under no circumstances by anything better than a standard Fiesta type car if you are just using it to get about Edinburgh.

It would be no more than a vanity thing and the biggest waste of money for a guy your age to make, imo.

Think Scott's got this one nailed, Morph. Sounds boring, but go for the increased deposit. It'll save you thousands in the long run.

The industry i'm in requires a lot of travelling around. I do a shed load of motorway driving so i'm looking for something decent, reliable and comfortable.

My focus at the minute gets me around but it's a 1999 and whilst it's only done 40k miles it's starting to feel it's age.

I need something with a bit of power behind it too, some cunt nearly killed me on the A9 and it's put the fear of death into me ever since when over taking Laugh

I do respect what you're saying and I can see where you're coming from but I probably won't be looking to buy for a long time now (as i said not even moved out yet Sad ) and i'm coming off the back of a half decent bit of work now so will have a wee bit to spend.

Can't go wrong with a Golf, so I'm told.

Begbie might be able to do you a good deal on a slightly soiled Punto. :begbie:

An audi a3 looks like a decent car. I know nothing about cars however. What i'd like to know is why you want a car that, if not out of your price range given your income, would take a while to be able to afford? Is it pretty much as a boy's toy? Do you think it'll be a decent investment?

The reason i ask is there's a laddie in my work who is about the same age as you and he spends about 35% of his gross wage on his flash - for his income - car. He works in glasgow city centre, so the time saving - given that the car park is a five minute walk and there's a bus stop outside my work - is probably a few minutes a day. It's his money to do with as he pleases but he is always broke for the last few days of the months and it just seems madness to me.

Having written that i now feel very middle aged. I feel like a man with a mortgage and a toyota yaris.

edit. What scott says is pretty much the same as me, but better and didnt take him ten minutes to write out because he was trying not to come across as a patronising paternalistic cunt.

Bought a 2009 Kia Ceed about 2 years ago at Central Car Auctions, ex motabilty and only 23,000 miles. Was a bargain and it's a decent car with a lot as standard, think it cost me about 5200 before fees.

Used one of those interest free credit cards and paid it off over a few years.

Once these invoices come in i should be able to afford it cash upfront. I'm very much against taking bank loans out so would already have the money saved up. It's not really an investment either, cars lose value there's not really much you can do that. I'd be buying it as a practical way to get around but also to enjoy it.

I'm not trying to sound smug here, but i'm rarely ever skint so it's not like i'm going to bankrupt myself trying to run it.

I want something i'm going to enjoy driving around in, given i spend a lot of time doing that. Instead of waking up in the morning and having to get into my old banger :oomatron: Laugh

Some people don't get cars and think they're a huge waste of money. I'm in the middle somewhere, i want something semi decent but i'm never going to take out a 15 grand loan to buy a car.

I am looking for something in the 3-5k price range.

I think you should list all the cars you fancy, find out which is the dearest, and pick that one.

A3's are pretty much just Golfs with another sticker on it.

Not ruling out a golf, nice cars.

Can do it online but I'd recommend getting someone to go along and check the cars out. You can see what's coming up each day so you don't need to go in blind.

I think with the diesel A3 you'll probably find they're high mileage while still asking top whack.

I'm considering that one ^^

High mileage as you said but i think if i could get it down to 2500 it'd be a fair price.

If it's what you want, go for it.

i guess i've always been someone who, given the choice, will take pain first and then pleasure rather than the other way about. If i could take a big chunk out of my mortgage when i was young i'd be delighted, and regularly top up my mortgage payments rather than treat myself as things are. But it's all just personal choice and if it's what you want, go for it. Just find a pal who's a mechanic who can look over anything you're gonna buy
