Searching for sugarman is an incredible piece of work. Outstanding. Last I watched though was the surviving auschwitz programme that was on BBC last week. Also very moving, it's probably on iplayer, worth checking out as they interview holocaust survivors with quite personal stories.

Last one I watched was 'The Culture High', pretty poor and lacked the expert and balanced views that it claimed to hold.

Two must watch for any Doc junkies, if you haven't already - The Square, available on Netflix it covers the Egyptian revolution from the ground. Which Way Home, crew follows people (mainly children) on their way through Central America to the US border. Both are really well made and very emotional.

Exit Through the Gift Shop - weirdly entertaining.

Before that, The Act of Killing, which is more than a little disturbing.

Same, was really good though. Liked the interviews with the prisoners, great perspective and made some pretty hard people look a lot more human.

e- Strangeways that is, not watched the death row.

Fucking wardens getting pished on their lunch break and coming back and being total (racist) cunts to the prisoners, literally every day!

Aye the racism thing I guess would be obvious I just hadn't considered it still being something that was institutional within my lifetime. Great to see that we've made progress though, to quote Dostoevsky(via Con-Air, won't pretend to be more cultured than I am) "The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons". To me it's obvious that you only make progress through reform and improvement of humanity, that means finding better solutions to problems we deal with emotionally rather than logically.

Documentaries are fantastic for building perspective, giving you a glimpse of a life you couldn't possibly imagine living, to do that makes you a deeper and more considered human. If you ever want to learn anything from history you need to get inside the heads of the people that were there, to empathise with their motives and understand their actions. Some people see this as weak, but really those that would meet crime with brutality are weak mentally and are amazingly short-sighted.
