I always (weirdly) classed Johnny Haynes as being from Edinburgh, even though he wasn't

I always wished I had seen more of Dave Mackay, there is barely any footage of him about.

Funny enough I was at a party talking to this boy who was 65 last night, as always the chat gets on to who you support, he never had a team but says he used to watch Hearts and Hibs throughout the years (weirdo).

Before I even asked who his favourite player was, he was gushing over Dave Mackay. Says he was the hardest player he's ever seen but with the talent to back it up. Also, the only team who knew off by hearts was our famous 50's team.

Big Dave must have been some player. Legend.

Sounds like a total hatchet man tbh. Bit of a shame to have our club's "greatest" player being a clogger.

That said, all football pre-1992 seems to be a dreadful farce of 22 fat dockyard workers kicking lumps out of each other before pausing for a pie roll and a smoke at half time. In that context, it's understandable.

Laugh

Like AP, I wish there was more footage of him around too. But the instrumental role he played in one of Scotland's greatest ever club sides, then one of England's greatest ever club sides; and obvious reverence he was held in by managers, his contemporaries in the game, and fans up and down the UK, is good enough for me.

His retort when journalists ask him if he's a Spurs man or a Derby man only makes him more of a legend really. Smile

What sort of party was this, AP?

Sounds a bit dodgy.

He's said it to more than one journo I think.

Btw, lest we forget, he won the English league as a manager too. With Derby!! What a legend.

My dad's uncle used to play 5 a sides with Dave Mackay after he'd retired.

They used to have a shower after the game and apparently old Dave has a massive penis.
