Easier just to cut out pasta I found. Cut out pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, milk and switch to diet drinks and you're pretty much done. Once you realise you can eat as much meat and cheese as you want it gets pretty easy. No starving yourself on 500 calories to lose weight. I regularly go over my recommended calorie intake, and have more than the 1g of protein per lb you're meant to have. Still have bags of energy at the gym and have seen gains whilst losing fat.

The wife loves pasta so I can't cut it out completely, though I do leave it more often that not - I'll often just have dinner without it while she has some. But sometimes I'll come in from 5s and I'm absolutely craving it. Another thing I do is throw a heap of broccoli in with the pasta so you fill up on that as well. All good.

I guess carbs must just be the devil. Only explanation.

You can do pasta type dishes with courgette or cauliflower. I've never bothered though.

For the kale. I just get a bag of the curly stuff from the supermarket, they're like a quid and half a bag does 2 people. Just throw much you need in a bowl (remembering it shrinks), removing all the hard stalks as you go. Toss it in a bit of olive oil until it all looks covered, then season it with sea salt (I go with Maldon) and cayenne pepper if you like it spicy. Salt is enough if you don't. Spread it out evenly on a baking tray, and put it in the oven. I used to blast it on a high heat for 10-15 minutes, but it cooked unevenly leaving you with some burnt and some soggy. Put it in at about 150c for 20-25 and it comes out crunchy and perfect. I was sceptical at first but it's the business, tastes just like popcorn if you only use salt.

I'm sure you can objectively see why a low carb diet will work for those who want to lose weight.

Added sugars are what you are looking to cut down on and stop  leading a sedantry lifestyle.

Do people feel overweight here? Is it a wee bit of tummy fatness they are trying to get rid of?

Obviously, but what you've said about being able to eat 'as much meat and cheese as you want' and 'go over your recommended calories and still lose weight' is bollocks (more precisely it's only true assuming you want a comparatively low amount of meat/cheese and your recommended calorie intake is wrong).

If people find low carbs a convenient, enjoyable way to cut calories from their diet then good luck to them.  It's no different to any other form of caloric restriction, though.

Edit: more initial weight loss due to reduced water retention, possibly less bloating if you have mild intolerances etc etc.

Sorry, Rog, but I'll require some clarification on this point. Are you suggesting that going low carb is allowing you to sidestep the laws of thermodynamics?

Mak can come across patronising on this topic- and it is one if his failings - but I've found when it's come to diet and nutrition it's best to take on board his advice.

I'm no nutrition expert but information from his postings have helped me in the past.

I respect his knowledge on the subject too. But he's very much a gym bro, and if you're not trying to pack on muscle with SQUATZ N OATZ then his advice is pretty shit.

It's patronising to suggest I'm not aware of water retention. To claim that all weight lost on LCHF diets is water weight, is ridiculous. You see my weight plummet initially. I lost half a stone in 5 days. That's water weight. See the further 25 pounds? That's not water weight. That's fat loss.

EDIT: Mak deleted the post I was replying to where he called me an idiot for not following his broscience.

Wiggo

You're losing weight because you're in a caloric deficit. That caloric deficit is brought about as a result of cutting out a macronutrient which is very easy to overeat and replacing it with increased amounts of two which are significantly more difficult to overeat.

Your 'proof' that you're somehow avoiding the laws of thermodynamics is that you've sometimes eaten 2,600 calories on given days and lost weight. 2,600 calories. At, what is it again, about 6'4? How many kilos, 80? 90? You're losing weight because you're burning more than 2,600 calories.

If you find that going low carb works for you then good for you: keep it up. You aren't losing weight because there's some special magic to low carb which allows you to not be in a deficit and still lose weight, though. Those are the dribblings of a cretin. And nothing about the laws of thermodynamics is changed by whether or not you go to the gym.

Key words emphasised for the hard of thinking. Looks like you're low on brain glycogen at the moment.

'Broscience', ffs. You're posting links to three-week studies on one subject, followed by some vague comments about insulin, and accusing me of broscience? I deleted the post because I decided to write something more substantial. I completely maintain that you're an idiot if you believe this shit.

That's quite interesting.

Do you exercise, Rog? Doesn't have to be gym.
