Any cycling fans out there?

Just purchased my first road bike (cheap and cheerful to see how I go) wow, it is quite a change from my daft wee mountain bike when I was a bairn!

Hoping to get into it, went for a wee spin tonight and really enjoyed pretending I was Wiggins.

What gear will I need? High vis jacket, lights, lock ...

I'd quite like to get into this, isn't it quite a high startup cost?

Love my cycling. Was down at Le Grand DÃpart this year, which was immense. I'm currently building up a vintage Colnago, which is going to be a beautiful ride when I'm finished. Built up an old Peugeot conversion to fixed gear and currently riding a track bike about town, built that up as well. For riding about the city, you can't beat a fixed gear IMO. Great fun as well. Very low maintenance as well if you're into that, and great for fitness. You can build up a conversion for pretty cheap, and even a really good track/Fixed bike can be picked up for pretty good prices.

This is my current ride:

I hope you never wear a hi-vis jacket ffs.

Lock - best buy are the kryptonite new york locks.

Lights - quite like the knog ones for ease of use, chuck them in a bag for no problem. Fibre flares (for your rear light) are similarly easy to use and chuck in a bag. If you were riding out of town then you might want something a bit more heavy duty than the knogs though.

Laugh Nice bike man.

What do you wear? I am a complete noob but thought that was the done thing when it's pitch black, I don't want to die. Sob Are lights enough you reckon?

I would maybe wear a jacket with wee 3m flashes on it and get good lights. The lights are the main thing. You can also get 3M reflective strips, and cut wee slivers and stick them on your spokes or your frame. I just rely on wee things like 3m on the inside of levis commuter jeans when you roll them up.

It depends what you're doing really. I use my bike as a means of getting around the town so I'm not going to put on a hi-vis if I'm meeting mates in a pub etc. If you were going out on long rides, especially out of town, you would need to go for heavy duty lights (autumn/winter) and might take a view on wearing different gear. But really, don't get too caught up in that if you're riding around town.

Having said that, these jackets would be mint (but then they're not hi-vis) http://store.nike.com/gb/en_gb/pd/shield...d-10259736

That Fibre flare I mentioned above is a cracking light - you could buy a couple and it would definitely make you visible!!

Nice one mate will get on it.

You use the Strava app? Just a case of having it in your pocket while you are cycling or do you need to do anything in particular to set it up?

Yeah I've got it, not used it for ages as I had to delete it as my memory is full on my phone. Just stick it in your pocket, no set up.

I started cycling to work in August 2012.

6.5 each way=13 miles a day=65 a week.I've not missed a day and would never go back to using the car for work. The only thing I hate is the fucking SW Edinburgh wind. I stay in the north of town and the office is in the south.

Some mornings it can knock fuck out of you Angry

Got the Car MOT in October and it's only done 1400 miles for the year Wink

Here's my summer & winter ride.I built the winter felly from old bikes I got from the tip.

Getting a wee taste for cycling now I must say.

Mainly been using the cycle routes trying to build up a bit of stamina, that Strava is great for tracking rides.

Just done Newhaven to Murraryfield and back, about 15km. Good fun.

Agree with Mikey re. cyclists. Strange, strange people.

I have a bmx type thing.

It's fucking shite.

Bought it cos a bird I fancied used to hang about at that skate park and wanted to impress her. Just about broke my neck going into the bowl thing.

Turns out when you're as good looking as me you don't need the bmx to get the girl tho.
