Saw a suggestion on another thread about starting a whisky thread so thought I'd give it a bash.

I'm a relatively newbie to the malt but have been giving it a concerted effort over the last year or so. Developed a nice wee collection and done a couple of tastings etc. One at a fancy whisky place in Soho and an unofficial one in the bar on the Royal Mile which used to be EH1 (Can't remember what it's called now).

Not a huge fan of massive peat monsters or even Laphroaig or Ardbeg. I do quite like Highland Park 12 and Jura Superstition both of which are more lightly peated. Quite like some of the Speysiders like Balvenie 12 and also Glenlivet 14 which is a lovely woody number. Also a massive fan of Auchentoshan Three Wood which is quite sweet and toffee-ish. I've also really enjoyed Old Pulteney 12 which has a weird combo of sweet and salty. Very nice indeed.

Am currently working my way through a 10 year old Aberlour which is dece and have a Jura Turas Mara once that's done. Looking forward to picking up a few bargains in the run up to Christmas.

So THF, over to you, what are you currently drinking and what are you looking to get into next?

Not an expert at all, always wanted to get into whisky

Had a bottle of Singleton a couple of months back. Thought it was alright. Quite enjoyed it

MacCallan is my auld mans usual. Fucking loves it

I do a lot of stuff at my work for whisky. Bannahubin, Ardberg, Glenfarclas, Jura, Balvenie and millions more. Never had any samples or gifts handed in, though if we have I've never seen them. Pocketed by the managment no doubt Snake

Had a few bottles back home but only one out here, which is Ardbeg 10 year old. Thinking of branching out and trying one of the Japanese whiskies next. Been into whisky for a couple of years now, started taking more of an interest when I got a summer job in a whisky shop. Still see myself as quite a whisky novice really, but enjoying getting better informed. :shitwhisky:

Rule #1. If it's from scotland it's whisky, not whiskey.

I'm an irregular drinker but the last few weddings i've been at have been big for whisky. The more i try pretty expensive stuff the more i think i could get in to it. My hip flask is usually filled with laphroaig; what would folk recommend that's similar?

Also nowhere close to being an expert, but being a Diggers celebrity ( Smug ) I've had my share. I'm specifically a Speyside man, and if I'm going to indulge, I'll take the Balvenie 15 or a Strathisla, a massively underrated malt.

Fun fact - my maw grew up in Strathisla House in Keith until the family had to sell it because my grandad died through alcoholism. It's a fair tipple.

A different expression of Laphroaig? It's pretty unique as far as I know. The quarter cask's meant to be nice.

My dads into his whisky, Laphroaig's one of them. Would say maybe Lagavulin or Ardbeg or maybe a Bowmore would be similar. Not a fan of them myself but don't really like peaty numbers.

Big fan of Highland Park though.

Don't think the other peaty whiskies are like Laphroaig beyond also being peaty tbf. They don't have the iodine thing going on.

Seriously Lewis, no cunt likes whisky the first time they taste it. Persevere, man - it's worth it.
