One of my Dad's best mates just retired from Glenmorangie so I've put in an order for the 18 y/o and one of each special cask finish.

Also ordered another bottle of Ardbeg 10 y/o as well as one each of the Uigeadail and Corryvreckan.

I'm drinking a Old Pultney 12 just now. Also got a Stronachy 10 which will be opened next.

I've also just opened a bottle I inherited from my Grandad when he passed away, a 23 y/o Glendullan from the rare malts selection. Me, my Dad and my father in law had a nip each a few nights after my Mrs gave birth to our first a few weeks back. It's excellent but I'll be saving it for special occasions.

Like the OP I'm a fan of the Balvennie Doublewood and Auchentoshan. I'll be looking to get one of each and also a Dalmore sometime in the new year.

Talisker is a funny one, didn't like the 10yo at first but after persevering I started to get quite into it. Same with the Highland Park. Not sure if it's my taste buds getting used to it or if it mellows over time once it's been opened.

Some good shouts on the thread so far.

Anyone had a Glendronnach 15? That's on my list to try.

Also interested in a decent Japanese whisky if anyone has any recommendations.

Finally any thoughts on Bruichladdich The Laddie or Ardbeg Uigedahl or Aberlour Abunadh? All NAS but am interested in people's views on them as heard decent things about them.

Currently working my way through the bottle of caol ila below. It's absolutely tremendous but more of a treat whisky. My go to nip tends to be Ardbeg but I'll drink anything if it's smokey and peaty. Opened a bottle of Ancnoc last week and it's really not to my taste but if light, sweet whisky's your thing then you'd probably like it. If I'm drinking speyside then it'll be a glenfarclas

Has anyone been to the pot still in Glasgow?

Really, really tried to get into whisky. As a scotsman, it's just one of these things I feel I should like. But I don't. It's just about drinkable for me but far from enjoyable. Kind of see it like cigarettes at the moment, like do you really like that? Or is it just a harharhar isn't this lovely type deal.

I'll let you know about the Ardbeg Uggy after Christmas. I've heard there's not much difference between it and the Corryvreckan, but the Uggy is meant to be even stronger and smokier tasting than most Ardbegs.

Is the Glendronnach not stopping being produced? Thought I'd heard that. Check it out as I may be talking shite but if I'm not, I'd snap up a bottle while you can.

Not tasted any Japanese whisky but also keen to try. Loads coming very highly recommended these days. Nikka, Yoichi and Yamazaki are the ones I've seen most often in shops in Edinburgh.

For anyone looking to get into whisky and get mashed for £30 in the process get tickets for whisky stramash. I've been the last couple of years ago and it's a good afternoon.

Ancnoc used to sponsor one of the galleries at work, so they had hunners of the stuff. Not particularly to my taste either, but the price was right.

Now they're sponsored Blue Moon beer.  VanGaals Bitch

This is where I was prior to my stint in the whisky shop. Always thought the wee rituals like nosing and swirling it around your mouth for ages were wanky, but after having it all explained to me and giving it a go I really found it made a difference. Would definitely recommend giving it a go.

In fairness, you also might just not like whisky.

It's nice, it's a wheat beer.

Can't stand whisky tbf, fucking rotten. Even the smell of it puts me off. Same with wine, can't drink that either.

Kind of the same as Roger, it's drinkable but i don't enjoy it at all.

Maybe someone should start a cigar thread next,  ffs, this thread is basically a poor embodiment of JKB's equivalent.  (no offence to the OP btw).

PS - would I buy a malt in a pub or restaurant - no!  would I buy a malt to sip at home - nope!  would I drink a malt if offered one at someone's home - politely yes.

Saying that, I volunteered on an Islay cattle farm for two weeks smack right in the middle of the mid-90s BSE/CFJ furor and on my day off I cycled a few miles to a local hostelry; entering was something akin to the pub scene in American Werewolf in London.  Anyway, sat down and got stuck into the Islay malts (when in Rome, eh?)- quarter gills too.  Wobbly ride home in the dark without lights; beware the occasional boy racer in his sooped-up Ford Escort mKII.

Aye, so Islays it is.  Pondlife

Tomatin isn't really a distillery you hear people talking about, but they have some really nice expressions and aren't too pricey.  The Cu Bocan is particularly nice.  Also enjoyed a burgundy cask aged Tullibardine a while back.

depending on how flush you feel, and exactly how much you enjoy your whisky....

£100ish for a bottle - but is one of the best I've tasted.

Shitwine

You should maybe try Talisker, it's also very peaty.

For those that like Highland Park, Scapa 16 is very nice although a bit more expensive than a bottle of Highland Park.

I amn't even a whisky drinker but the husband is so I have learned a few things along the way. I have always wanted to drink it but just can't get a taste for it.

I'm sure Scapa 16 is also being discontinued. Another one to maybe snap up while you can.
