Is there a resident TH expert on bicycles?
Going for walks is becoming very boring very quickly so might buy myself a bike to get out and about on for my daily exercise and possibly even commute.

I'd say get a road bike. So much lighter and faster. They take time to get used to if you're a beginner though.Anything between £400 - £600 will be decent.

Don't get a road bike if you live in Edinburgh. Shambles of an idea. Buy a hybrid.

Or you might want to look at a cyclocross/gravel bike. These are cracking deals IMO. https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CBPXSLPRIV...-road-bike https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CBPXXLSAPE...cross-bike Or for a single speed. This is a good introduction to getting around on a bike, no mainteance really and will be great for getting you about a city. Nice looking bike and Fuji are well made. https://www.wiggle.co.uk/fuji-feather-city-bike-2020/? another option https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-mon...e-EV339944 (04-01-2020, 10:11 AM)Ross Kemp On Spice Wrote: Why? Buckle the wheels, can't bounce off kerbs when you want to avoid folk/take shortcuts, potholes, dying from buses when your wheels get stuck in the tram tracks. I could list the reasons all day. Fair enough if you're taking it away from city, but you'd get laughed out of the country here using a road bike with your spandex through a city and this place actually has cycle paths and flat roads. Edit: Walt's suggestion of a single speed bike in Edinburgh love it.

My mate sent me a Fuji single speed around this price when I was looking around December, maybe the 19 edition. He said similar to you but i struggled with the hills when I bought that mtb (lol), would this help as it's lighter? How heavy is the gear on they bikes?

The amount of folk out clearly on their first ever bike ride is pretty funny. No idea how to cycle on the road or of any kind of road safety. Don't be one of those guys.

I really cringe at people using road bikes rather than commuter bikes around city centres now. Please provide an explanation why you would do this? Do you wear all the gear and that?

Absolutely perfect for city riding. Still ride my track bike and bring it through. Scott the welt jumping up kerbs and riding on pavements.

Scott, this is Edinburgh. You can cut about like this.

If you deny that, then you are only looking for an argument and need to go and speak to a bike specialist. Would love to see you in your lycra bobbling along the cobbled streets. Which race are you entering?

You can choose your gear ratio by chucking on a new rear cog. You can actually add two cogs, with different number of teeth so you could change it if you wanted (i.e. for a long ride out of town) or a lot of folk do a flip flop rear hub so one is fixed, the other single speed. In fact just had a look and that fuji has a flip flop. Gearing on it is 46/16. Pretty good for town I would reckon. enough to maintain speed when you get going. |
