Are MacBooks just a case of getting used to them? I had to use my bird’s the other day for some work stuff and found it an absolute nightmare to navigate. I’ve only ever used Windows though.

Kinda! Grew up (well I was already an adult as computers were a bit basic when I was at school) on Windows-based desktops/laptops and then got a hulking big Apple Mac, mainy for my photos (overkill but they looked great on it). Found it a bit of a pain as it didn't seem as intutive, and in some ways I still find that to be the case.

Short answer: depends what you've cut your teeth on! Monty Umm

I had only ever used Windows until I picked up my MacBook Pro in 2014. I won't go back to Windows again now.

The new Macbook Air with the M1 chip is getting rave reviews online, i'd recommend getting one of them.

I've never prescribed to the idea that Apple is amazing. the iphone is literally no different to a good quality Samsung and people get rinsed out of money for the name.

Macbook however I am completely on board with. It's super cost-efficient. You can get away with replacing it once every 10 years, and even then it will prob still work fine.

Trump Ha You're in danger of being neggied for this heresy (and your use of "prescribed" instead of "subscribed").

I just bought a new Air a couple of months ago and it’s superb. My previous MacBook’s hard drive only just packed in and I’d hammered it for 8 and a half years, leaving it on overnight all the time etc. Even then, the rest of the hardware was still spot on and if I feel the need I can have it repaired for about 120 quid off the Apple store. The reliability is unreal.

It’s reliability and speed that I’m really after tbh, I’ve got a 5 year old ASUS with an i5 processor and you’re talking 5-7 minutes before you can do anything on it from turning it on. It needs to be on the charger all the time too Warnock

Sounds like that's more likely to be because it has a old-style mechanical hard disk rather than a SSD.

If you’re going for the Mac make sure all the programs you use are compatible. We ran into some issues with some software not working properly on different operating systems Fart Smelly

I don’t think you need to spend that much money for what you’re going to use it for, but business expense anyway jjay

I probably won’t get a Mac, just want whatever I get to be fast and remain fast.

Kash. I've currently got 26 tabs open on Firefox and it makes not a blind bit of difference to the performance whereas my old laptop was much like yours from your description. As Acey says it'll just be old technology, which in windows-based doesn't seen to age as well as Mac. I'd just get a chromebook and see how it works for you. It it doesn't it's a decent enough pieve of kit to have by your bedside for watching late night pish on the web. Sound

Monty Oh You I'm trying to date a couple of old photos of Calton Jail in the late 1800s but it's a bitch, and in doing so then keep getting sucked further down the rabbit hole of yet more pictures (of Edinburgh).   Daniel Jos

E:  I've just noticed it's an i7 processor so maybe it does make a difference, though I'm sure teh i5s are pretty good too.
