McPake knows

trying hard not to breach TH's tight moral code.

All sounds very positive. McPake clearly knows him as a player and hopefully he kicks on with game time and shows some of that ability he talks about.
He's not looked great so far but he's not had an easy time coming off the bench. Would be brilliant if he could develop into a potential replacement for Naismith. Even if we sign him on a permanent deal at the end of the season he'll be 33 and has obvious injury issues. Levein clearly rates him and like the article says, if he improves like Souttar has he'll have been a very shrewd signing.

A couple of decent touches here and there but when we're absolutely toiling up front, we need a lot more.

A lot worse than him out there today. He done fine like.

He was better than MacLean today, but had a dreadful second half.
To use a line that's been used for many young players that end up failing, you can't fault his effort, but there's no end product.

I'd rather Danny Amankwaa than him.

He's just not a lead-the-line player, he's a second striker trying to do the main striker gig. Judge him properly when he gets a run with someone alongside him I guess.

I think it's fairly obvious quite early on if someone is going to cut it and you just don't get that from Wighton. We need strikers who are capable of playing as a lone striker as we find ourselves in that formation quite a lot of the time. The only thing that can change to accommodate him is playing alongside uche, but he played with Maclean there and didnt offer much despite having a striker to play with.

I don't think it's unreasonable ask a first team striker to partner Steven MacLean up front. He's an experienced striker to play with, good experience of positioning, nice touch, passing and shot, should be perfect foil for a striker with some legs. Although I wouldn't say Wighton is significantly faster than MacLean, tbh.

I think Array is right that Wighton looks like he'd rather play behind the main striker which isn't great with MacLean as he likes to drop deep.
If his natural game isn't running the channels off a striker who drops deep then it's going to take him a few games to adapt, particularly if he's coming back from injury. It isn't ideal that we don't have a midfielder who wants to run beyond MacLean to create a bit more space either. Djoum and Lee have been playing fine but they're either sitting a bit deeper or playing out to the left, rather than getting up to support the forwards. Got to hope Wighton can adapt and improve a bit with more game time. |
