Maradona's often remarked that he could only have scored his wondergoal against England - because Italy, Germany, Brazil, Spain or Uruguay would've chopped him down. And I'm afraid England's Fair Play awards in 1990, 1996 and 1998 were not figments of my imagination. We're almost always one of the cleanest sides. It's just that now, if someone tries it on, we'll give as good we get back.

He fucking merked Terry Butcher so much that he went on to relegate Hibs

And this year, of the four semi-finalists? Croatia 114 fouls, 15 yellow cards France 93 fouls, 12 yellow cards Belgium 99 fouls, 11 yellow cards England 72 fouls, 8 yellow cards In fouls per game, England ranked fourth best in the whole tournament. Behind only Spain, Germany (who could've done with fouling more, frankly)... and Saudi Arabia, who weren't good enough to foul anyone in the first place.

Funnily enough, you're much more likely to need to chop down players like Messi, Suarez and Neymar instead of Roman Torres and Marcus Berg

And we had a tougher 2nd round tie - against filthy opponents, the opposite of Japan - than they did too.

Is this like celebrating winning the singing?

Might explain why Belgium embarrassed your team when they finally came up against decent opposition?

Colombia were a shower of hacking bastards (not that it stopped Henderson and Maguire taking dives). You would probably commit a lot more fouls against a tricky Brazilian side rather than a sleepwalking Sweden side.

Actually, what I noticed this year was how predicated our approach was on staying organised (which worked until you-know-when) and barely diving in at all. Quite smart really. Belgium reserves v England reserves was a dead rubber which neither side wanted to win. Belgium picked up 2 yellow cards to our 0 and committed 14 fouls to our 11. Through the first round, in which we played the same opponents, Belgium picked up 5 yellow cards to our 2; and committed 43 fouls to our 33. Their foul count v Brazil - 16 (plus 2 yellow cards) - was one fewer than they committed against Panama. Oh - and England played for a whole hour longer at the tournament than either France or Belgium, yet had a far better disciplinary record than either.
