Interesting read. Glad he’s staying for the season. Lee and a few others in a similar position could be moving on in summer so will be interesting to see if he can stake a claim. Not convinced myself, but a whole season of men’s football could develop him.

He was due back at Riccarton this month, but will stay on loan at Links Park for the rest of the season before rejoining his parent club to challenge for a first-team place.

Hearts and Montrose are in the process of extending their agreement to ensure the player remains in League One until the end of the current campaign. Hearts intend to give him an opportunity next term, provided he agrees to sign a new contract.

Cochrane, 19, has made ten appearances for Montrose to date and helped them climb to third in the league table. His immediate future lies in Angus but the Hearts manager Robbie Neilson believes he still carries the potential to establish himself at Tynecastle Park.

Cochrane’s contract expires at the end of the season. Riccarton coaching staff hope he will sign a new deal and join them for pre-season training.

“Harry is going to stay out at Montrose. They’ve been delighted with him and the boy is enjoying playing first-team football, which is great,” Neilson told the Evening News.
“They’re doing well in the league so he is going to stay there until the summer. That will give him even more game time. Hopefully he’ll get another 15 or 20 matches there, which would be great for him.
“We felt he needed to play football. With the age he’s at, he still needs to develop. We’ve all spoken about him needing to bulk up and fill out a wee bit.
“For us, the main thing was making sure he got game time. That’s why we loaned him out a couple of months ago and he’s done really well at Montrose.

“He will come back in the summer. Hopefully he has progressed again, then he can come in for pre-season and try to get himself into the team.”
After breaking into the Hearts first-team at the age of 16, Cochrane signed a new three-year deal in April 2018. He then flitted in and out of the side and spent time on loan at Dunfermline between August 2019 and January 2020.

Why bother bringing him back, he can run faster than the geriatrics we have in the middle of the park so won’t be needed.

I wouldn't blame the boy if he decided to move on. Complete waste of his time if we continue to play diddies like Lee in front of him.

They have been talking about him needing to bulk up since he came through.

No idea if he is trying his hardest to do so, but the fact that Neilson is still saying that is (IMO) illuminating.

I remember listening to a podcast with him where he was talking about hammering the gym and how he hated eating a lot but needed to bulk up.

His physique seemed good enough a couple year ago when he was running rings around spl teams so a bit strange this is now the deciding factor in his career at hearts.

Fair enough he was a young laddie so has some growing to do but not sure he was so weak and pathetic it merited never giving him a game again because of it. Sadly he won’t be the last decent talent coming through who is ditched based on not being big enough. Physical development seems to be the be all and end all at the expense of their technical ability.

You need to be able to complete physically in the Scottish leagues. It's not backwards or being a dinosaur to say that.

It was clear from about his second match that Cochrane would struggle with the pace and strength. Not remember Scott Brown chucking him about the place?

I don’t remember Scott brown getting the better of Cochrane in the 4-0 game, quite the opposite and it was the next game against them when Scott brown was just snapping him every time he went near him as he had spent all the time since then getting the piss ripped out of him for being in the back pocket of a 16 year old.

Not sure brown is really a good comparison anyway since he’s bullied the biggest and ugliest players in this league for the last however many years.

I think it is a bit dinosaur to think you need to be big and strong first and foremost to play in Scotland but canny really be arsed arguing about it.

You can kid yourself on that you can be a wee weed and succeed but there's not many, if any, examples of it. There's a reason Neilson is saying he needs to bulk up. I don't think they are expecting a Ronaldo physique from him. Just not to be built like a child.

For the one great game he had almost every other game has passed him by unfortunately.

I still think he has a slight chance but if he can't do basics like be strong enough to compete with men he'll drop down the leagues rapidly.

He has dropped down the leagues rapidly.

He’s finished at hearts, clearly the club sees no future for him here if he can’t even get a game in the championship at 19 for us so best just to move him on and wish him the best of luck at a club who might value his technical ability.

It’s strange as well we persist with shite like Walker and wighton (suppose wighton bulked up a bit for this season) when their fitness is horrific but will bin a promising youngster after no even getting a full season in the squad.

We’ll persist with utterly hopeless bruisers as well, but not give the same chance to a player who’s more technically gifted than physically.

Just think we look at things the wrong way in Scotland.
