Bunch of interviews with guys that played football in the post war years. Pretty entertaining. Just at a bit where some boy said he refused to play for the club ever again because they never gave him his full allotment of fags which formed part of the Christmas bonus  Zlat

Really loved this book. Got it thinking it would be a laugh reading about guys who jinked and weeved in and out of defenders that had been building ships all morning and being world class because you smoked 40 less Woodbines a week.

Was actually really touching and had loads of good stories about British life in general post war and the lives of working class people. End up getting nostalgic for a time before you were born and then you realise working down a pit for £4 a week wouldn't be all that  Warnock

Reading Exit West just now. Sat and read 100 pages in one go last night, about 140 in. I just know it's going to get brutal, but what a book so far.

Found this when I was looking through old boxes of books at my Mum's. Think I had it for Uni and probably never looked it at Warnock

Guy was a slave who served on a Royal Navy ship and other ships before buying his freedom and travelling the world. Became involved in the abolition movement when he was older. Good one for Neave if you're still reading books by black authors Sound

Hate him so much Zlat

Have recently finished Capitalism and Slavery by Eric Williams, 404 by Sabri Louatah, and The Handmaid's Tale (which I hadn't read before). All very good. About to start Je n'ai qu'une langue, ce n'est pas la mienne by Kaoutar Harchi. Quite Good

Reading Maigret Sets a Trap by George Simenon the now. Pretty good. Bit like a French Phillip Marlowe.

Bit grim how women only ever exist in these books to get romanced by the main character or hacked to death though Monty Umm

Just saw this - we worked on extracts from this in my high school history class. Had forgotten all about it and just realised how unusual it must've been to be doing Black history at a Scottish school in the early noughties Quite Good

Is the handmaids tale worth a read? I know the tv show stuck pretty religiously to the the book text.

I enjoyed it - haven't seen the TV show, so can't compare. The way it's written drags a bit at times, but overall it's a really good read.

We did black history at school but it was all about MLK and the civil rights movement in America. Didn't really learn anything about Britain or people coming from the Commonwealth etc.

Only bit of history about black people in Scotland I knew until I was about 25 was my gran trying to pay a Jamaican bus conductor with a fiver and him saying, 'Where do you want to go Madam, to the moon?' Heh

Very beautiful read.

Quote:The knives and forks jingled on the table as we sped through the darkness; the little circle of gin and vermouth contracted to oval, lengthened again with the sway of the carriage, lapped back again, touched the lip, never spilt. I was leaving the day behind me. Julia pulled off her hat and tossed it into the rack above her, and shook her night-dark hair with a little sigh of ease—a sigh fit for the pillow, the sinking firelight and a window open to the stars and the whisper of bare trees.

Quote:I felt that I was leaving part of myself behind, and that wherever I went afterwards I should feel the lack of it, and search for it hopelessly, as ghosts are said to do, frequenting the spots where they buried material treasures without which they cannot pay their way to the nether world

Wow  Sob
