I've never even tried. In P7 our teacher read us Harry Potter at the end of every day over the course of a few weeks and we were all bored shitless, just wanting to go home or listening to the other class play rounders outside til home time. That fucked the fantasy genre for me  Warnock

Tried to read The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Passoa a wee while back, but it was a bit too close to the bone  Monty Ooh

Been reading American Psycho for the first time in about 10 year the day. Don't think I've got the stomach for it in my old age, tbh  Crowe

That and I can't really be doing with reading descriptions of some yuppie's blazer that go on for about 4 pages  Warnock

Aye, one of the rare times I'd say the film is better than the book.

I read the book when i was about 15 Joseek

They did such a good job of adapting it for film, removing the most outrageous elements or only mentioning them in passing (eating brains etc), and ramping up the dark comedy aspect.

Has anyone read White Teeth by Zadie Smith? Got 100 pages in a while ago and had to put it down because it was dreadful, but it always pops up on these 50 best book lists or whatever. Am I missing something? I just found every character a massive stereotype (gap-toothed Caribbean lassie with an afro described as passionate and fiery, the geeky Asian kid etc), and it all just felt really superficial.

There's something about fiction from the 00s that makes it age worse than stuff written a hundred years ago Monty Chuckle

Na, not read it.

Know what you mean about modern fiction though. Was actually thinking the other day it would be some feat to write a really great novel that took into account all the shite like smart phones, twitter etc.

As soon as I read about someone texting or using social media in a book I switch off. Wonder why that is. Think the most recently published book I read was either The Overstory or Ministry of Utmost Happiness, and they were both brilliant, barely mention tech though.

Aye, there's something about the modern world that just makes it seem ludicrous in a book.

Mind you, George Orwell thought that concrete and wirelesses an aberration in nineteen canteen Monty Chuckle
