Have any of you been keeping up with the IPCC report released this week?

https://twitter.com/IPCC_CH/status/14257...14916?s=20

https://twitter.com/LeoHickman/status/14...85608?s=20

Does anyone think we will start to act in time now we appear to have 10-15 years to make drastic cuts into our emissions? Can we realistically make the changes necessary to hit those targets whilst we're still married to the capitalist ideal of infinite growth and protecting the economy at all costs?

The report seemed to be all over the news outlets on monday and now the news cycle has already moved on to whos going to be in Strictly or how much Pret are paying their staff Monty Oh Well

I'm sure the politicians will take heed ahead of COP26 in Glasgow though...

Gave up on the Climate Crisis tbh, countries like China and the US are the problem and too many people make a fortune out of killing the environment for there to be any meaningful change.

Revolution is needed across the board so these cunts can be held to account for filling their pockets while the world burns.

I'm not sure if this is downloadable for you, Picard. This recent paper (hyperlinked) is an interesting read since it's on your mind. Touches upon most of what you are talking about.

This quote is the long version of Sarkozy's warnock response:

Quote:First, there is the insistent construction of a dystopian quasi-catastrophic future. This image is staged as the horizon that needs to be avoided or averted. In other words, urgent action is required today in order to deflect the unfolding of this possible future. This view of course nurtures the idea that it is not too late yet, that the forecasted future can still be deflected. For many people around the world, however, they already live in the socio-ecological apocalypse, demonstrated by the large numbers of climate refugees and mounting socio-ecological problems in the poorest parts of the world. The apocalypse has already happened for them. The fear of the consequences of climate change in one place is paralleled by already existing socio-ecological disintegration elsewhere. The promise of a catastrophe-to-come is one around which middle-class desires and fears circulate. While the elites nurture an apocalyptic dystopia that can nonetheless be avoided (for them), the majority of the world already lives “within the collapse of civilization” The apocalypse is indeed a combined and uneven one, both in time and across space.

Pretty sure i told someone to start building the Ark when the floods were mentioned.
Also mentioned that some of the countries experiencing record-breaking high temperatures will be uninhabitable soon enough.
And parts of Edinburgh will be underwater in 10 years.

Cheery stuff.

That's the sort of mentality that has got us to where we are today.

Unless they come up with something sustainable akin to the present modes of transport we currently use, we'll be stuck in our own neighbourhoods until, well, well you top yersel.

I don't think you really got the spirit of what I'm saying.
The planet is 4 billion years old. We don't even register when it comes to shocks and disturbances the planet has endured. Our parasitic behaviour towards our earth only began/ramped up approx. 150 years ago.

Mother Nature always laughs last. It may take a couple thousand years to recover, but we'll be long extinct by then.

Quite Good aye I've managed to download it, will have a read.

I've been reading this book recently which has a really interesting "history" of capitalism and how we came to regard it as the only way to operate. The second half then goes on to talk about degrowth and how we can be happy on less. It all seems like a nice idea, then I remember we can't even get people to mildly inconvenience themselves to wear a mask Monty Umm

I'm not going to pretend that i know the history of earth, but what i know is that i've seen a rapid decline in a short period of time.

Nice, I don't think the paper is even published yet, so it's very recent/relevant.

Yeah, de-growth and post-growth stuff has gained alot of traction in the last five years. You should have a wee swatch at Agroecology too. Farming with nature instead of trying to dominate it. Requires us to all change our perspective on what we consume mind (eating seasonally, local circular economies, scaling back globalisation etc...). Sacrifices to be made, but opportunities too. Lets be honest a tomato in your back green tastes ten times better than one shipped over from the other side of the world. Would certainly reduce emissions (which if you read the paper it discusses this techno-managerial approach of focusing on things like emissions stats etc...isn't going to help that necessity for a radical change in perspective and policy/politics.

I think his point is we can drive the global temp up 4/5/6 degrees and kill ourselves off and it won't make much of a difference to the planet. In 10,000 years you won't even realise we were here apart from all the plastic everywhere Monty Oh Well

Would you be happy with less, Picard? Summer holiday in Melrose, climbing the Eildon Hills with 1000s of others like it was Ben Nevis on a sunny Saturday? Birthday meal out eating nothing but veg and/or pisshy meat substitutes? Hearts Euro trips on the big screen at Tynie? Cycling everywhere in monsoon fucking windy af Scots rain/hail? Must be tonnes of other shite times that these green cunts haven't yet thought through! Monty Oh Well

There is an ice age due in about 2000 year, your ancestors will be able to fly down from mars in their UFO's to skate and catch fish. Sound
