Sure is a relief for those of us who were always pro-indy but not particularly pro-SNP or pro-Sturgeon Monty Smug

Hopefully as Sturgeons head is on the block it will lead to real democratisation of the Yes movement. Big opportunity here.

See the BBC used their question at the White House briefing to ask where the Churchill bust had been moved to?

I can’t be arsed with Marina Hyde tbh Warnock

Flinging about 90s pop culture references in your every column, whether they are appropriate or not, does not good writing make. Writing for out of touch centrist dads Jezza

Don't get it with her either. Did she not roast Jeremy Corbyn when he was trying to get elected and now writes about what the evil, Tory government is doing every week? Woy

Hyde has quite a few memorable articles where she rips the pish.

As Begbie's post above shows, a lot of folk fancy themselves as comedy writers, however rarely does the banter transfer so easily from their heads onto the page.  Monty Oh Well

This wee take down of Laurence Fox recently was quite good: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...ory-donors

I think there was a Cummings driving to the castle one last summer which was entertaining too.

You're right, that it comes down to personal taste. In the context of a light hearted opinion columnist, yes of course I think it's good. I'm not however saying she's Virginia Woolf.  Warnock  The bit I quoted is a really nice piece of writing (in my view) because in very few words it satirises the absurdity of  the idea of 'culture wars' and mocks the self-importance that Laurence Fox has, how he sees himself compared to reality. Don Quixote type delusions, which works even more here because he on horseback (I thought you'd appreciate the DQ reference since you read it it recently  Stendel creep ).  For me, the best type of writing is one that can produce interesting imagery and concepts like that in the reader in as few words as possible.

Overall I think she's a great writer, probably because I find Guardian columns so tedious in the main. I admit some of her patter can fall flat - very similar to Stewart Lee when he does his columns, so I'm suprised that Begbie is so harsh, but maybe he views her as a poor imitation of Lee.

As an aside, modern day journalism I kind of split it in half in my mind. You have the big boys "investigative journalists" and then you have the pointless folk "the commentariat". If you are going to be part of the commentariat, then you have to have a self-awareness that you are primarly employed as a writer and not someone who's opinion actually means a shit, so it's your job to be entertaining, engaging or at least say something a little different. An Owen Jones-esque "so this is my view on Syrian refugees and this is why I think we treat refugees badly and I think we should treat them much better!" I can barely stomach them.

While Nick Cohen is a marginally better writer than Owen Jones, he's also much higher on the scale of assuming he has any substance to provide on any topic beyond being a competent writer. Cohen is the shining example of someone who thinks he should be listened to because he can write. Actually hate this guy - his opinions are about as worthwhile as the folk on TH but he thinks he's Orwell. Fuck ye, Nicky.  APRant  I suppose I appreciate Hyde's self awareness that her columns are just there to satirise public life rather than holding some sort of grandiose notion that they matter a jot. Ironically, she is probably more impactful on cultural consciousness with using this style than the uber-serious litany of guardan columnists that spraff utter shite.

^^^^Well said Scott - excellent piece of writing ^^^^
