What is going on here man Warnock

Furlough was good but he still let a significant number of people slip through the net and by October there will be mass redundancies, particularly as we are seeing localised lockdowns more and more. The half price scran for August thing to get the economy going is frankly pathetic.

A real superman would introduce UBI now. It is the perfect time.

My hot take on Sunak: the Tories are worried that Starmer's centrism has the potential to beat Johnson's right-wing populism (i.e. swing voters in the south of England would take pretty much anything over socialism, but would vote for Blair mk II over pound shop Trumpism), so Sunak is being groomed as a potential successor in case it looks like Starmer could win in a few years. Being seen as more competent in a time of crisis than Johnson won't be much help if he's up against Sunak, who's also being pushed as competent in a time of crisis. Jezza

Having someone who isn't white as their leader will deflect every single claim of islamophobia as well  Monty Oh Well

They'll also be able to say that they've had two women leaders and one non-white leader before Labour have had either Monty Oh Well

It really is the most Tory thing ever to cling to advancements in social justice they vehemently oppose to make them more electable. Wouldn't fly with a non-complicit press, but you can guarantee the Guardian will be praising the cabinet for its diversity, saying Labour should take note Warnock

I actually think the Tories are genuinely better at having representation in high-profile roles than Labour, presumably because everyone tacitly knows the Tories want to maintain existing hierarchies (hence 'conservative'), while Labour are so terrified of being seen as the party of political correctness that much of the party is actively resistant to the idea of being led by anything other than a white man.

They're even nefarious with the positions they give BAME representation imo: Home Office and Exchequer are normally pretty thankless, harsh-seeming roles, whose departments' policies create difficulty in many people's lives (Windrush and austerity being two obvious examples). Aye, Sunak is getting good press just now, but the post-Brexit, post-Covid budgets are going to be brutal; Windrush destroyed what was left of Patel's reputation. In the Tories' eyes, it's best a non-white person delivers the bad news. Don't forget before Sunak it was Sajid Javid, and Alok Sharma is the Business Secretary, who I'm sure will have loads of bad news to deliver to British businesses soon enough.

Sunak is obviously hoping Boris implodes so he can win a one-horse leadership contest before he has to deal with the hard stuff.

I think you're probably right. Your average Tory will be delighted at someone like Sunak being positioned as the next PM, because he ticks the "how can we be racist when" box, as well as being filthy rich and no threat whatsoever to Conservative values. Just like Priti "daughter of immigrants" Patel who probably hates immigrants more than anyone else in the UK.

Get the feeling Priti Patel is from one of these conservative indian families that have a pathological hatred for muslims and love the empire.

Such a weird tweet. Really snarky and unprofessional, not that it surprises me much.

What does 'take at face value' even mean? Were there thousands of comments asking if Rishi Sunak was genuinely a super hero?

We need someone in Uruguay with no visible assets to shed some light on this situation. Jez

It's the Trump tactic of flooding the news with incompetence, corruption and general shite so that no one knows what to concentrate on.
