Dyel?

Tell us all about your fitness goals or your New Year's Resolution to get involved with Hayley's Health Kick or whatever. I'll probably mainly look for ways to find fault with what you're doing then claim to be being helpful. It'll be great, guys. Get involved.

Joined the gym in October lost a stone pretty early on. Tryin to shed another one by end of March. Tips on good ways to, I think real gym folk call it "shedding/shed" would be very welcome. Also stuff to mix it up in the gym. Running can get awfy boring.

Is it steady state running that you're doing? I prefer to at least mix in high intensity interval training, i.e. short bursts at very high intensity mixed with longer recovery intervals. Bodyweight circuits and skipping are my favourite kinds of cardio beside Muay Thai, though. Also think that a good lifting programme is the most important part of any training regime whether you're trying to gain or lose weight.

May as well say a bit about myself since this is my thread. My main way of training's usually Muay Thai but there's no club in St Andrews. The closest clubs are in Dundee and although classes are fairly reasonable at about £4 per session the bus through costs £8 and getting a bus pass wouldn't work out any cheaper assuming three sessions a week (which is about the most I'd manage given than I work three times a week). I was training with the uni MMA club, but they'll not be back until next semester so at the moment I'm doing three cardio sessions a week alternating between a 10 minute skipping workout followed by a bodyweight circuit and a bodyweight circuit followed by half hour run.

Also lifting three times a week. My lifts haven't completely recovered yet after I broke my arm in May, but at the moment I'm running the Madcows 5x5 programme and lifts are as follows:

Squat: 5RM 122.5kg, 3RM 127.5kg
Bench: 5RM 85kg, 3RM 92.5kg
Pendlay row: 5RM 67.5kg, 3RM 80kg
Deadlift: 5RM 147.5kg
Military press: 5RM 57.5kg

Bodyweight 73kg

Still not brilliant figures but getting back to where I want to be after injury. Aiming to bulk to around 75-6kg before cutting back down.

I was doing steady state running at about 9k for about 20 mins. I have tried to start the whole intervals thing but not sure what I should be doing. Is it 2mins on 2mins off sort of a deal? Down to walking pace or a light jog.

Also been doing cycling, but 30 mins on it is a bit depressing when you see how little calories are burnt. (I know that prob not the best thing to do, or if it's accurate in any way, just a bit depressing after some serious effort.)

2 minutes on 2 minutes off doesn't sound brilliant to me. The idea is to push yourself as hard as you can for the intense intervals, so 30 seconds - 1 minute maximum. Maybe 1 minute if you're just starting out. Can't suggest what pace to go at without knowing what kind of shape you're in, but regardless of where you start out if you try to increase the pace each time (even by a really small amount like 0.5k) then you'll pretty quickly reach a point where you're pushing yourself.

I don't do that much cardio in the gym because most of what I do doesn't need much or any equipment, but when I do HIIT training on a treadmill I'll set the incline to 10% and do sets of 20-25 second sprints (usually nine sets, increasing the pace every three).

Not fitness per se, but tracking calories again. Sob Flatmate bought a set of scales a few weeks ago, and I discovered that I'm a stone heavier than I thought I was. Muggy

Every time I've tracked calories before, I've lost weight relatively quickly. If anything, it more or less stops me snacking in the evenings, which I just do absent-mindedly otherwise.

Got a couple of kettlebells, so need to get into a routine with those. Can never be arsed after work though. Laugh

I jacked the gym in about a year ago and go spinning, play fives, play badminton and hill-walk instead. I feel much fitter for it but I was always pretty half arsed in the gym so that's no real surprise. I kinda wish I had the drive to actually stick to a program and build strength.

Started playing tennis with a work mate. Swiftly realised that when I learned how to hit a ball about 17 years ago, no cunt taught me how to serve. Turns out its fucking difficult to hold your serve when you double fault on every point. Who knew?

Acey I'm the same as you, as soon as I start tracking the calories I am a lot more consistent in my diet. Shocking at times without it though!

Started doing weights yesterday and one of the big guys said I should be on protein shakes.

Anyone got any recommendations? Looking to spend about £200-300 a month brahs.

Took mhaks advice and tried to do those intervals. 10mins at steady runnin pace then 1min intervals near flat out then another min back at the steady pace. 4reps.

I was a fucking disgusting sweaty mess. But it was decent.

My gym is rife with bursds as well. Helps with motivation. Pinilla

Get some herbalife. I once convinced it was a pyramid scheme but then I saw that Danny Grainger endorses it.
