Was injuries that forced it but the sentiment is still true. Great transformation
Portugal have never even been in a final of the world cup since it was founded. Argentina are the 3rd most successful side in world football so let's not pretend it's the same.
It's actually a slight on Messi that it's took him this long to bag a world cup whereas if Ronaldo had managed to drag Portugal all the way to a world cup title it would have been the greatest feat of all time.
Portugal squad overall this year was just as good if not better than the Argy one but the difference is Argentina had the true greatest leading them in some of his best form and Portugal had the second greatest who should now be turning out for Finland. It's sad to see him go to Saudi and no doubt Messi will follow him to one of these leagues soon enough.

I don't believe Portugal had the better squad, they've got loads of decent system players at club level but not much substance to them. Losing to Morocco really showed that, Morocco are worse than Scotland.
Argentina were also aided by loads of soft penalties which really helped them along, probably the most in world cup history? I'd be surprised if it wasn't. Even then it came down to the lottery of spot kicks.
