Belgium security level to remain at its highest level as the metro and schools are told to remain closed tomorrow.

And yes, you're right: if there's one thing I think characterises today's world, and today's young, it's insecurity. Worrying about the future, the world around us changing very quickly, insecure jobs/homes etc. I do agree that events like your examples don't happen any more... and it's a huge pity. We're all so much more atomised and dispersed nowadays. All of which, of course, made the scenes in Germany stand out that much more. With the large caveat that politics there are already turning against the promises made by Merkel which triggered such a huge influx anyway.

Imagine living in Belgium at the moment, knowing that you're pretty much waiting for something to happen

Based on zero info whatsoever, my suspicion is they've got wind of a possible chemical attack.

Would I fuck be going to Brussels.
Chemical does seem the most likely at the moment, given the theft of the suits from the hospital.
11-22-2015, 07:15 PM
Why would you go to Brussels just now?
Must be shite if you're in Belgium, I'd be considering a wee holiday over here or something for the time being.

They've had it booked for months. Your option is either go or shite it, who would have seriously had Brussels ads target

Wouldn't read too much in to the suits theft from the hospital in assuming a chemical attack. There's surely a link between those that commited the Paris attack, the train attack, Charlie Hebdo and the shootings at the Jewish museum. I'd be surprised if there wasn't a common link in the sourcing of their equipment and it appears that they're getting more ambitious but I still think a chemical attack/dirty bomb is beyond their capabilities.
I think it's more likely that if those suits are connected, it's to help them perform a conventional attack or to create fear rather than use them as protective clothing for that kind of thing. Putting soliders out on street corners isn't there to protect the public, it's to act as a galvanizer for any cell attempting something, so they'll be forced in to attacking equally well armed soldiers/officers and unable to kill unimpeded until the responders arrive. To me it's a disruption tactic by the security services.

Spent a great few days in Brussels; staying in a spiffy wee quaint hotel 20 yards off the Grand Place prior to Scotland's crucial WCQ game in 2001. Cost a fucking fortune but it was central & convenient, and I was late in deciding to go. Anyway, I'd typically drink all day with mates, and then carry on with my Muslim mate Khalid, whom I had befriended the first night while looking to score my typical digestif. I'd buy cheap bevvy (boatles of Juliper, etc); then we'd return to the darker and quieter arched environs of the square where we'd smoke hashish and chat until daybreak, by which time I'd stumble back to my nearby gaff, scoff copious quantities of the rather excellent breakfast, then head up stairs to pass out. Mates would pick me up mid-afternoon to repeat.
Anyway, wouldn't be surprised if Khalid has been radicalised now and probably on the run, as on one occasion we sat around with some more elderly gentlemen who basically talked only in arabic, scowled at me all night (I grinned back; I was wankered obviously). Have another drink lads. Scoatland. Brussels ... always a haven for terrorists me thinks. Run Khalid, Run!

Can't imagine it will be the most enjoyable stress free trip tbh.
