(12-06-2017, 08:21 PM)Alan Partridge Wrote: For once, her measured, careful language is the correct approach here. But a two-state solution with the US recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital is, frankly, about as viable as no hard border in Ireland with the UK leaving the single market and customs union. For a long, long, long time now, the reality of Israel-Palestine has been as follows. Only the US has had the ability, should it have so wished, to broker a lasting settlement - but there's been no serious political will to do so since the Camp David talks collapsed and the second intifada erupted 2000. Not even under Obama did that substantially change. Worse: where once upon a time, Israel would've collapsed in a heap in about 24 hours flat had the US withdrawn its support, nowadays, the tail wags the dog. In many American states, university lecturers are only given positions if they sign documents stating they will never boycott Israel; the power of the pro-Israel lobby (not the Jewish community, Peas N Gravy; the pro-Israel lobby) is vast. To the extent that someone like Marco Rubio, a so-called moderate Republican, routinely refers to the occupied territories as... Judea and Samaria. And in Israel itself, the political climate moves ever further rightwards. Israel, you might argue, was the place in the developed world where the current nativist intolerance sweeping the West first manifested itself. Hasidic Jews breed like there's no tomorrow; Russian orthodox Jews continue to sweep into the country. Meaning there's more chance of Jewish Home (Israel's very own version of the Nazis, to all intents and purposes) controlling the government than of the left ever getting back in. In Palestine, meanwhile, Hamas continue to rule supreme; the Palestinian Authority has been a busted flush for over a decade now. All of which means that there was absolutely no chance of peace ever materialising even before today. The two-state solution was already long since finished. A one-state solution seems impossible for all sorts of logistical, historical, religious and emotional reasons. There seems no hope left of this appalling state of affairs ever changing.

Odd you missed out the main reason a one state solution won't work, Shaun.
There's more Palestinians than Israelis and the Israelis will not accept a situation where they are outnumbered.

Elsewhere in the interview, he is asked whether he would press a hypothetical button that would cause the death of President Trump. "In the interests of the human race I would, yes," he replies. "I think he's a terrible scourge." MOZZER HATES TRUMP
