Paterson will be able to negotiate with other clubs in January. If they want him they offer the best deal then get him signed up the same way they would in the summer. Giving a fee won't change that.
Once he's signed they offer Hearts increments of £50k until we accept.
If we get a fee approaching 7 figures for Paterson in January we'll have done very well.
