Went on a hillwalk to Reykjadalur today - quite a popular hot spring valley. Should've taken us about an hour to get from the car to the river, but took about double that because Mrs Acey couldn't take three steps without slipping on ice and falling over. She's absolutely covered in bruises, and for once I'm not responsible.
Absolutely ridiculously cold once we got there - about -15C when you include the strong wind chill. Definitely the coldest I've ever been, and getting out of a warm river into that was genuine "I wonder if I'll die" territory.
Good experience though. Absolutely beautiful scenery.

Where is it folk usually go when they go to Thailand?
Do most people just go to Bangkok and then do trips out from there? Just looking at prices of places that are a wee bit out of the norm. Thailand is somewhere I've always fancied, would quite like to visit the picturesque islands etc but not sure if that's something you'd tend to do whilst travelling the country rather than staying in the same place.
Looking at China too, maybe a bit short notice for this year but it's not that expensive. Really fancy Japan but apparently it's expensive as fuck, even when you're there. Maybe snake could give some travel advice
Bangkoks where you fly into as its main airport. Would only spend a night or 2 there. Novelty wears off quickly.
Would recommend visiting as many islands as possible. Koh samui, koh tao, koh phangan is one side of the country then phuket and phi phi island and krabi are other side of country. Internal flights are cheap or you could boat it but would take fucking ages.
Definitely worth going to. Favourite place i've been. Fancy Bali next.
Geez a shout if you want any more recommendations etc
We've only ever spent the day there, they live near Alicante so not there every day.
The beach is really good, and if you walk along towards the bus station end IIRC there's a big area that has cafes/restaurants that overlook the sea. Just next to there there's a big carnival/shows sort of thing that the kids would enjoy.
We went upto the castle too for a look which I'm fairly sure was free. Get some really good views from up there and they have a bar which is great for a wee lunch time drink
Beachside is definitely where it's at though, plenty restaurants and bars down there and would probably be quite good at night down there too.
