- People providing an urgent, critical service for others (the emergency services, but also plumbers like Pete given how many boilers freeze up in this sort of weather)
- Everyone else
One of the worst things about the roads becoming so clogged up and dangerous - because so many went into work this morning - is it seriously impedes the emergency services.
I agree about the idiots on the road who didn't need to be. People going too slowly causing people to get stuck on hills.
A flip side to that is the more people on the road the better the road becomes. More or less.
If a job came in today where I live I'd have been walking to it. Probably a 3 mile radius which normally isn't a problem it certainly becomes one in that weather.

Anyone who went into work today when they didn't need to is an idiot. Any employers who demanded their employees come in today are an utter disgrace. And the moment the red alert was issued, that should've been that. Everyone home immediately please. I find it incredible that some employers apparently ummed and ahhed for hours afterwards.
That video Chrambo posted? The fucking idiots in that car put a huge number of people in serious danger. And on days like this, the roads are full of fucking idiots who don't know what they're doing.
What about people who wouldn't get paid if they didn't go to work?

Idiots ignore these warnings and travel anyway.
Idiots then get stuck in unsafe road conditions.
Idiots then blame everyone other than themselves for their own idiocy.
As predictable as the media wheeling out the words 'treacherous conditions' every time snow impacts upon driving.
I really don't think the Scottish Govt. have done enough here though. This could have been avoided.
I'm pretty sure the SG just release warnings every time it's a bit windy or rainy now so they can just not bother doing any prep. As much as it's a red warning there is limited evidence of gritting bar a few main roads. The national resillience seems rather lucklustre.
This is no worse than 2010 and it took about 2 weeks of that constant before everything ground to a halt.

Nurse on my wife's Ward has the coastguard giving her a run in tonight. Quite common over here for them to help out in adverse weather conditions. Wife's walking in for her shift tomorrow because we live too close

Depends on why. If it's because their employers are cunts... well, their employers are cunts and need a serious word with themselves. Dred was right: there should be penalties for employers who behave like that. If it's because they work for themselves, it's a pretty ludicrous position to be in if someone can't afford one day without pay.
Even not in bad weather, there's horrible numbers of accidents that happen every year because of ridiculous demands from employers. Must be here at this time on the dot regardless of circumstances. Must work through the night. Must drive for hours and hours without a break. All of this is just incredibly, mindlessly wrong. And as the UK's atrocious productivity levels show, it doesn't work either.

Yeah lets cancel the home care, meals on wheels, chemists, doctors surgeries, public transport, electrical engineers etc. etc. They're all battling in to work because their employers are cunts and not because the country can't just ground to a halt.
if we do your suggestion the least we can do is turn the old dears heating off now so they die off quickly

There is chat about the army bringing them in tomorrow.
If on call they usually get taxis home but they can't tonight for some reason so have to risk driving or walk home Joke.
