Peak Pulis, enjoyable how many of them were scored against Arsenal

Charlie Adam was on Si Ferry this week. He said the only tactics Pulis would work on at training was the diagonal up to Crouch

18 years since Zidane done this at Hampden. One of the all time great goals.

It was a great goal. I really was hoping Leverkusen would win that match. Always felt they were probably the last pure team to come close to winning it; a provincial team from an unfancied league full of generally speaking, unknowns or at best tier two names.
Pure entertaiment knocking out both Liverpool & United in the latter KO stages. Previously putting Arsenal, Juve, a perrenial top notch Lyon, and of coursse that great turn-of-the-millenium Deportivo team, all to the sword. Of course Zidane won it for Madrid with that volley but I think the fact it killed of the dreams of Leverkusen is one of the reasons I've always been a bit meh about it. It would be nowhere near my top ten goals ever.

You'd have a Messi tap in over it, let's be honest.

Nahh! It's a volley, they're cool!

It's difficult to judge really; it's close to him but obviously it's the pace that's beat him not the position. Slow reaction times? Maybe. Think quite a few of today's keepers would have got a strong hand on that including craigy.

Always picture that goal being a lot further out.
Some technique though like. Zidane might be the best player to watch ever

Porto v Monaco final was good for two teams outside the really big ones getting to the final. Ludovic Giuly and Fernando Morientes banging in the goals for Monaco Was hoping Ajax would win it last year for the same reasons. Hate when young teams like that get broken up.

Was that the last time it essentially happened, two unfancied teams, in 2004? Wee Guily, must have been a nighmare to mark, zipping around and turning on a dime. Aye that Ajax team were class when they played their game. Unfortunately got bullied out of it by shite route one footy!

Yeah, if you look the winners over the last 20 years other than Porto they all come from the top 4 leagues; Spain (10), England (4), Italy (3), Germany (2). Real Madrid 6 Barcelona 4 Bayern Munich 2 AC Milan 2 Liverpool 2 Man Utd 1 Chelsea 1 Inter Milan 1 In fact since that Porto v Monaco final in 2003-04 the 30 finalists have all been from those 4 leagues. Totally closed shop these days! |
