I get the impression that a lot of the folk criticising the strike have the attitude of 'they're doctors, they must be earning good money so they shouldn't be allowed to complain', but the reality is they won't be earning great money until they reach consultant or GP-type level.
What does your department deal with? Do you think it's a good thing that it will move to weekend work, or are you just accepting it as an inevitability? Think it was Walt earlier who made the point that people don't want to deal with doctors at the weekends except in emergencies, I'd apply this to most other work-related dealings as well.
Ok, I just got the impression you didn't from what you said in your post.
I didn't say they shouldn't be allowed to complain, I just said I don't have much sympathy for them on this particular issue because major contract changes are something that many workers in most sectors have had to come to terms with. They can take as long as they like and state their case as loudly as they wish, all I'm saying is I don't agree that they're being shafted and have found some of the arguments I heard to be disingenuous and playing on peoples emotion. There's this unquestionable sanctity around the NHS in this country, and nobody can propose reform or suggest that things might not actually be working perfectly in quite a few areas without being shouted down like they want to sweep the poor and sick in to the gutters. I don't doubt the value of the NHS I just think people get a little hysterical on the subject and I know it's not without it's faults.
I mainly deal with tradesman, I think I've clarified earlier what my thoughts on weekend work are. I don't know about people not wanting to deal with doctors at the weekend, I'm sure there will be enough that would like their non-emergency issues delt with on a Saturday/Sunday that would alleviate the pressure on appointments Mon-Fri.
