I like him as well and would be pretty happy with him as an appointment, but I think we can do a lot better. We should be aiming as high as possible.

He's not my first choice but he'd easily be out most solid appointment under budge.

I'm happy with taking on someone who has recently earned their stripes in the modern game. Seems like quite a driven guy.

The worry is Robinson is a flash in the pan this season but he seems to be doing well and it'd be good to get a manager who is currently in form. Not sure how long we'll sit on this for, Macphee in until Christmas might not be the worst idea in the world to get a good gauge of who is interested in the job.

My issue is that we've been left in such a mess by the previous incumbent, with players who don't put in the right effort, a transfer policy that is shambolic, defensive disorganisation as standard and a disconnect between fans and club to list a few issues, that I think we do need an experienced, credible manager who has the ability to both stamp his personality and ethos on the entire club AND have the respect of Dr B to the point that she will listen and adapt. I don't think Robinson is weak and I would expect him to do a pretty good job, but I think Budge would look at him and see someone young who is learning, maybe who doesn't know it all yet. I think we need someone who she sees in the same vein as she did Levein, but competent.

He played some hellish stuff until he got the lads confidence up and then brought through Hastie/Turnbull etc...I think he had quite a mature approach there. Pragmatic. Reminds me of McInnes in that sense.

Sure, like I say I think he's a good manager and I'd happily take him - but he knew Motherwell inside out before taking over with his two assistant spells, so not quite an analogous situation, especially with Levein having had the Chairman Mao role here for the last five years. It will take a massive personality and the unconditional respect of Budge to turn that round and that's the one thing that makes me hanker for a bit more experience. Would definitely be a good appointment though.

Some good points there about him already knowing Motherwell before taking the reins.
For me, he's an interesting appointment. Folk are suggesting it's a boring appointment etc... but I think we have to go with managers who are on the top of their game, rather than pulling someone out of the cold.

He has accumulated far more points over the past 18 months than our now departed autocrat Hasn't everyone though!

I don't know much about him. What's he won? Why's he so good?

His biggest achievements have been getting Motherwell to two cup finals, which is very good going given his budget. I think people are mostly impressed by his ability to spot young players and get his sides playing with intensity and belief, which are so far removed from what we've been watching recently
Oh, and Wiki says his win % is 46 which is pretty much staggeringly good for Motherwell. Not finished in the top 6 though I don't think.

Only been managing a couple of years, so far he's got Motherwell to a couple of finals and they seem to be over performing. Good with young lads and seems to be a no nonsense guy, taken to Scottish football very well and you'd like to think he will continue to improve, rather than our last manager who was clearly on the slide. He's got a bit about him.

The non-football minded in our support think he is going places.

Hearts regularly sign trophy winning managers right enough

Uninspiring jobber.
Will be a Derek McInnes type that will have us playing boring football and meeting expectations and fuck all else. Bland as fuck, so perfect for Budge and co.

Craig Brown did it over a far shorter period - less than a league season. McCall's overall record was lower than Robinson's during a time when Rangers, Hibs and Hearts were out the league. Plus, those two have some of the best win records of all time for Motherwell, so seems a bit harsh to talk Robinson's record down because it's not noticeably better than two of their best ever. A 46% win rate at Hearts would place him above the likes of Jefferies, Laszlo, Levein, and Sergio in our recent past as well, by the way. I'm not even that bothered for him, far from my first choice and as I've said I think we should be aiming higher, but his record is definitely decent for what it is.

Personally, I'd love us to make a statement of intent and get a big name to give us a bit of belief and to get the best out the squad, but from what's been mentioned thus far, Robinson isn't the worst and would be a safe, albeit uninspiring appointment.

We should definitely be able to sell the job to a big name - do well with Hearts and you open up the possibility of managing in England. Be that a younger manager who comes with an outstanding pedigree, or someone like Moyes who needs to recover his reputation a bit. The worst that can happen is they say no Robinson would be a solid choice - similar to McInnes in that he's done it at a smaller club, and could be successful with more resources. |
