But it's more that in practice, AQ have as good as been subsumed by ISIS. AQ's finances have been so destroyed by what, in effect, is an internal coup within jihadism that, deep in the heart of its supposed powerbase of Waziristan, Pakistan, it was reduced to selling its laptops and cars just to buy food and pay rent. AQ's senior clerics loathe ISIS... but they have no power any longer. How could they? All the impact's been made by ISIS ever since early last year: in a matter of months, ISIS managed territorially what AQ had never even threatened to do, and proved so savvy in propaganda terms that it made itself feared at a level beyond which AQ had managed too. So all the funds have gone to ISIS, all the recruits have gone to ISIS, all the weapons have gone to ISIS... and whether you're a former AQ operative in hiding in the West, or a returnee from Syria, what some doddery old cleric in Pakistan thinks ain't much when set against the dramatic impact of a group which swears it's just following Islamic prophecy. Go back to VS' point earlier. ISIS' MO is the very thing which is so terrifying: because if it claims to be following religious scripture, then does things (ie. establishing the Caliphate or taking Dabiq) which for all the world appear to confirm this, it makes them all the more powerful among the impressionable, the marginalised, the alienated and the dregs. Among a certain section of plankton looking for a purpose in their pathetic little lives, in other words.

Interesting about not doing anything to expose the cops - social media, but also they're saying not to do the 'flash your lights to warn other cars there are cops hiding round the bend' which makes sense.
